Blackfin Tuna, Wahoo & Big Mahi Spring Fishing Report

gruop fishing ft lauderdale fishing

Wow, what a spring it has been for good fishing in Fort Lauderdale.  We have been catching blackfin tuna consistently along with a lot of mahi and a few wahoo.  The sailfish have slowed down a little as the wind has been out of the South, but on the days it turns North we are getting them on the edge.
The key has been to fish the rips and edges.  The edge has been in about 300 to 500 feet lately with beautiful blue water on the deep side.  It acts as a highway for fish to find food.  We simply sit on the edge with our baits right in their path and have been doing very well.  Kite fishing and trolling planers has been the most effective.
There has also been an abundance of weed out here.  While it makes fishing more difficult, it acts as a housing for baitfish thus keeping the predators in the areas and feeding constantly.  Finding frigate birds as been the giveaway as to where the dolphin have been.  They have been ranging from 10 to 25 pounds with some 50 pounders caught recently int the area.   Our good friend to our South, lost a monster at the boat last week.
I expect the blackfin tuna bite to keep going for another 4 weeks, so now is the time to get in on this bite.  We will run trips all the way until dusk for those that want to target them in the evening as well.
